Think Gene: Andrew’s 23andMe Kit

  • Kevin · 1 year ago
I wonder if Navigenics also uses Oragene for saliva collection... anyone know of any alternatives? I know that you can buy chemicals to treat swabs to allow indefinite storage at room temperature, but I suspect Oragene patented the idea of having such chemicals automatically released in a way transparent to the spitter.

It seems like an interesting toy to me. LoL. By the way, what's the differences or comparison between Companies 23andMe and deCODEme?

I just picked up a 23andMe kit as a part of their Research Revolution campaign. They're trying to better understand disease in a crowd-sourced user-generated way. I think it makes a ton of sense.

I wonder what all the results show. Were they very thorough? I thought about trying this one but wasn't sure if it was the right one to go with.

I am simply not be able to convinced myself..that it is going to make a huge effect on the part of genomic literacy among the clinicians, all because, a majority of doctors generally lack the time and motivation.

I think that’s pretty cool. Knowing what diseases you are prone to will help people make changes in their diets, exercise or work habits to make the risk of getting these diseases or conditions even smaller.

Obviously some people may not find value in this but in cases where people want to know what types of cancer they are prone to or about being resistant to AIDS, is absolutely invaluable.

23andMe is pretty upfront about the limitations of their testing once you dig a bit into the results. But still, if they’re going to look at 600,000 different parts of my DNA, you’d think they could add a few more to give me a stronger answer about whether or not I am a CF carrier.

Your article is so useful and informative for everyone I think. I have found there some interesting information which I have never known before. Thanks a lot for this great post!
